Dr. Wolfgang Obermeier
Wolfgang Obermeier is research associate in the working group for Physical Geography and Remote Sensing led by Prof. Dr. Lukas Lehnert in the Faculty of Geosciences at LMU Munich. He studied Geography at the Philipps-University of Marburg and the Faith University in Istanbul. His research uses data from field experiments, remote sensing approaches (including satellite data) and modeling approaches, and focuses on the terrestrial biosphere and its interactions with humans and the atmosphere. His main aim is to contribute to advancing climate mitigation strategies by improving our understanding of carbon fluxes and ecosystem responses.
As the Innovation Group leader in the LabForest project, funded by the BMBF, he contributes to establishing a real-world laboratory in LMU’s university forest. This initiative evaluates various forest management strategies, particularly their effects on biodiversity, ecosystem services, and economic viability to provide valuable insights into sustainable forestry practices. Dr. Obermeier is also actively engaged in assessing the trade-offs and synergies of terrestrial carbon dioxide removal methods through the STEPSEC project. His research also extends to the climatic effects of peatland rewetting, a key focus of the WETSCAPES2.0 project.
